Daejeon Highlights: TSC Kickboxing Gym

Part of my series, Daejeon Highlights, where I talk about what’s good in this little big city.

Time to talk about the thing consuming my life. I love kickboxing. My friend Abbie G made this video for those of who in Daejeon you might love it too!

I’ve gone to another kickboxing gym in Daejeon, but TSC Gym is definitely better. I’ve been going for three months now, and I am so much stronger, faster and well-trained than when I started. It’s also a seriously sweaty, intense workout. Punching and kicking things is SO fun, who knew??

There’s two gyms in Daejeon, one in Taepyeong-dong and the other in Boksu-dong!

The coaches speak a little bit of English, but we try to use as much Korean as possible.

When you arrive, you’ll get your temp checked and suit up. We’re required to wear uniforms. They’ll teach you how to put it on and wrap your hands securely. Took me a while, but now it takes no time at all.

The first two-three months are individualized, so you’ll be working one-on-one with the instructor. This costs 200,000 won ($170~) for one hour, twice a week for four weeks. Then, it goes down to 160,000 won ($140~).

Lots of our training is focused on breathing and practicing the forms over and over until we can do it perfectly. It’s become so second nature to me now. Muscle memory is an amazing thing, y’all.

My only regret is I wish I’d started this sooner. Abbie and I have made friends with the coaches—this weekend, we’re going to their farm, owned by the kickboxing association, to eat some subak!

Hope you check it out if you’re in Daejeon! Finding individualized kickboxing training for this cheap is rare.
